Can a small change in the tilapia’s on-going feeding strategy impair its growth? - doi: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v35i3.18290 Animal Sciences
Caldini, Nayara Nunes; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Pereira, Nayagra Vidal; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Rebouças, Vanessa Tomaz; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e; UFC.
The aim of the present work was to answer the following question: can a small change in the tilapia’s on-going feeding strategy impair its growth? In the initial phase of the study, fish were evenly distributed and maintained for two weeks in four tanks. In tanks 1 and 2, the ration was given in three equal meals at 8, 12 and 16h or at 9, 13 and 17h, respectively. In tanks 3 and 4, there was only one daily meal at 9 or 10 o’clock, respectively. In the second 8-week phase, fish from tank 1 were distributed into two groups in ten 100-L tanks: the 8-12-16 group, in which fish were always fed at 8, 12 and 16h; and the 8-12-16/9-13-17 group, in which fish were fed at 8, 12 and 16h in the first four weeks and at 9, 13 and 17h in the last four weeks. Fish from...

Correlation between Escherichia coli and limnological variables in water samples of the Lagoa da Maraponga, Fortaleza, Ceará State, Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i2.7842 Biological Sciences
Pereira, Vitor Matheus Galdino; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Gomes, Raimundo Bemvindo; Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica do Estado do Ceará - CEFETCE; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e; UFC.
The present work examined possible relationship between the Escherichia coli counts and the concentrations of free CO2, dissolved oxygen, reactive phosphorus, total ammonia, nitrite, pH, transparency and electric conductivity in water samples from the Lagoa da Maraponga (Fortaleza, Ceará State). Eight samplings were carried out every fifteen days to take samples under the water’s surface at three sampling stations. Regression analyses were performed with the variable with the greatest Pearson coefficients searching for the best fitted curve to observed data. The correlation between the water pH and E. coli was best represented by the equation ŷ = 7.63 – 2.92 * 10-4 x (r² = 0.53; P = 0.06) where x is the E. coli count (MPN 100 mL-1) and y is the...

Effects of CaCO3 liming on water quality and growth performance of fingerlings of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus - DOI: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v31i3.6263 Animal Sciences
Cavalcante, Davi de Holanda; UFC; Poliato, Alexandro de Sousa; UFC; Ribeiro, Diego Castro; UFC; Magalhães, Frederico Batista; UFC; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e; UFC.
The present study was carried out for 6 week with Nile tilapia, Oreochomis niloticus, fingerlings (0.77 ± 0.04 g) to assess the effects of moderate CaCO3 liming on water pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, free CO2 and total ammonia, as well as on fish final body weight, final body length, survival and FCR. Eighteen 25-L polyethylene aquaria were used to hold the experimental fish (15 fish per aquarium). Nine aquaria were set in the lab’s indoor room and nine aquaria in its outdoor area. Two types of water (clear or green) and three different water quality managements (none, HCl acidification and CaCO3 liming) were evaluated simultaneously in a 3 x 2 factorial design. The application of analytical calcium carbonate at 1 g 10 L-1 in the clear...

Growth performance of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, fingerlings reared in Na2CO3 limed waters - doi: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v32i3.8510 Animal Sciences
Cavalcante, Davi de Holanda; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Barros, Renan Loiola; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e; UFC.
Current experiment was undertaken during 6 weeks with Nile tilapia, Oreochomis niloticus, fingerlings (1.28 ± 0.03 g) to assess the effects of moderate Na2CO3 liming on water quality and fish growth performance. Twenty-four 25 L-aquaria, with 15 fish per aquarium, were used, of which twelve aquaria were placed in the lab’s indoor room and twelve in the outdoor area. Two types of water (clear or green) and three different water-quality managements (none, HCl acidification and Na2CO3 liming) were simultaneously evaluated in a 3 x 2 factorial design. Total ammonia, calcium hardness, pH and total alkalinity in the green water aquaria were significantly higher than rates in the clear water aquaria. Slight liming acid water with Na2CO3 did not produce...

Water quality and Nile tilapia growth performance under different feeding schedules - doi: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v33i4.12207 Animal Sciences
Caldini, Nayara Nunes; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Rebouças, Vanessa Tomaz; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Cavalcante, Davi de Holanda; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Martins, Rafael Barroso; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e; UFC.
Present study investigated the effects of different feeding schedules on certain variables of water quality and growth performance of Nile tilapia juveniles. Fifteen 25-L aquaria were used to hold the experimental fish population for six weeks. Five fingerlings (1.86 ± 0.13 g) were stocked in each aquarium (200 fish m-3; n = 5). The diet provided to fish and the feeding rates adopted were the same for all fish. The daily ration was divided in four meals (8, 11, 13 and 16h). In the positive control group (25/25/25/25), the daily ration was equally divided in the four meals; in the negative control group (40/30/20/10), the daily ration was unevenly divided in a progressively decreasing fashion (40, 30, 20 and 10%) throughout the day; in the experimental...
